Imagine overhead baggage compartments on aeroplanes that you had to hold open with one arm while you lifted up heavy luggage with the other. Or lids on vats in factories or labs that had to be held open manually while chemicals were poured in. Imagine if car boots slammed down on people’s heads the moment you let go of them.
For convenience, safety and better access, lid supports and stays are an absolute necessity in all sorts of situations. And while the foundations of our lid stay designs are always strength and reliability – our strongest supports can take loads up to 150kgf – what makes the Sugatsune range unique is the additional functionality and attention to detail that elevate our supports above the ordinary.

- Soft close stays: Fitted with our patented Lapcon damper technology, soft close stays deliver perfectly controlled closing motion to help avoid slamming and accidents wherever lids and flaps are used in the workplace.
- Lift assist stays: Heavy lids are not only a safety risk, they are hard work to open. Our spring-loaded lift-assist stays lighten the load, taking over the opening motion and preventing lids slamming back down.
- Torque stays: Torque stays provide a ‘free stop’ solution, securely holding open in any position. Useful for situations where opening a lid to its full height would put it out of reach for closing.
More Than Just Lids
Stays and supports are traditionally associated with vertical-opening lids and flaps. But over the years we have developed our range so that we now offer stays and stay-derived components that open in no fewer than TEN different ways, including different directions.
So while your standard horizontal lid is described as ‘top opening’, and is usually hinged from the back of the unit, and front-facing flaps are either upwards opening from the top or downwards opening from the bottom, we’ve adapted our stays so they are also suitable for ordinary swing-opening cabinet doors.
One particular speciality in this category is our foot stays. Bottom-mounted on swing-opening cabinet doors, they lock open in various positions and are released with the foot, perfect for things like hospital medicine and lab trolleys.
We also make stays for vertical slide mechanisms to hold panels that open by sliding up and down. These in turn have evolved into complete systems for upwards-opening flaps and cabinet doors, with three options available.
